Misty Mountain Designs moving to wordpress...

One thing that never changes is change itself. There have been many changes in my life in the past several months. The most recent is the fact I am not going to school this semester. I am graduating with my bachelor of arts in Spanish. Then I will proceed to take classes at a local community college next semester and transfer to a university in Kentucky to finish the bachelor of science in Geology. The only real thing I'm bummed about is the fact I can't take any geology classes with the amazing professors at my current university.

Continuing with the theme of change however, I've decided to move my blog to wordpress. I want a blogging site that is easy to access from my phone, and that I can update when I don't have time to post from a desktop computer. Wordpress has this feature where I can transfer my old blog posts on here to the new one, so no old posts will be lost.

This is the current prototype

I really like the app for wordpress installed on my phone and find it is friendlier for posting. I do not have to get on a laptop to edit the borders of my images for starters. I can also share more of my spontaneous photography as well.

Please visit the link above and tell me what you like about it so far. It is still a work in progress.

Knitting and Music

So the other day I got to thinking about time travel. Random, I know.

Most people I imagine would go back in time so that they could change something. But this wasn't the first thing that came to mind. If I travelled back in time I would go to concerts haha.

My favorite musicians for the most part are no longer alive. And if they are, they are really old and no longer with the band or touring.

These are a few that I would go to (who are no longer alive or groups with one or all members no longer alive)
  • Woodstock (concert)
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • George Harrison
  • John Lennon
  • Janis Joplin
  • The Mamas and the Papas
  • Nirvana
  • The Grateful Dead
  • Bob Marley
  • Boston
  • The Moody Blues
To name a few, I'm sure there are ones I am missing. And this definitely does not include groups where all the members are still alive.
The reason I'm posting about music is because it has always been such a large part of my life. My dad held his headphones up to my moms belly before I was born. And since he passed away when I was four, it has been my connection to him.

It provides such inspiration. Many of my early pottery works were inspired because of music:

If you look closely in the photos you can see cd album covers hanging on the wall.

Music makes us happy, it can make us sad... It has the ability to spark an emotion. From this emotion, I derive creative inspiration. In fact I find that I attach memories to certain songs, and to reaccess this emotion, all I have to do is listen to the song.

Right now, this is my inspiration. It has helped me crawl out of my creative writers block. It wasn't until the other day, when I listened to the following song that I remembered when I can't find inspiration all I need to do is turn on one of my favorite albums.

These are my knitting thoughts for the day. What inspires you?

FO: First Design

*drum roll* And now to reveal my latest finished design! Le Moustache Beanie!

I am currently finishing up the pdf, but before I release it for test knitting I will knit this pattern up again, I might adjust the placement of the moustaches. But on that note, if you would like to test knit for me please let me know in the comments below. It requires worsted weight yarn, it took approximately 175 to 190 yards of brown and less than 30 of the pink (these are guess-timates at the moment). At the moment only Cecilia from "Don't Drool on the Wool" has generously offered to help me test knit (thank you!).

If you see this design and feel inspired to knit your own, please respect my rights as a designer, thank you. The pattern will be shortly available on ravelry for your knitting pleasure.

Yarn Store Closure

So this morning I woke up and thought it was Tuesday. Yes, that's how on top of things I am. But it was a happy thing to discover because that means tomorrow is payday!

There is a yarn store an hour away from me going out of business. This is a double edged sword because it means yet another yarn store I can't go to but it also means they are having an awesome sale.

Last week I scored yarn that would have cost me $200 for only $100. It was mainly cascade 220 and a couple skeins of manos. But that being said, I never really went to this store very much. It had been in business a very long time and a lot of the yarn was old. You could also tell that this shop thrived during the novelty yarn craze that happened four or five years ago. Their "sale" selection was chocked full of ugly novelty yarns that won't sell anymore.

This sounds very harsh but this isn't the reason she is going out of business. She is retiring and no one wanted to buy her business. I think she might have fared better if she had pushed her business in a younger direction and put her yarn stand up off the floor. Because who wants to bend over to look through everything or buy yarn that was subject to every dirty shoe or gust of dirty wind that blew into its cubby on the floor?

Well criticism aside it was a good yarn store for certain kinds of yarns. But they aren't yarns I cannot find elsewhere thankfully. I will post more yarnporn pictures later of my purchases!

Le I Am The Walrus Moustache Beanie

Herro, welcome to my poorly neglected blog as of late. While I haven't been blogging I have been getting some things done. The end of my summer is proving to be very busy and I start school next week. My insanely organized amazing geomorphology professor has already sent out homework, yay? I am not back in school mode whatsoever.

Although I am thinking that as this is my last semester at my current college, I will give myself a break and take some "fun" classes. I want to take digital photography so I can improve the look of my blog, and maybe learn some graphic design. I have been a little better at utilizing other social media outlets that I have listed on the sidebar. Some I'm finding are more useful than others, and when my blogging skills improve and I get more followers I may delete them.

I thought perhaps it was a mistake to name my blog Misty Mountain Designs because I haven't had the time to make things for my Etsy store, or design much really. Its really difficult with school and work to find much down time. However, I am almost finished with my next design, here is a sneak preview:

Le I Am The Walrus Moustache Beanie (muahaha)

I am in need of a couple test knitters if anyone is interested. Its a simple knit, you should know how to carry the yarn behind for color work, but that only last for a few rows, otherwise is simple stockinette. You don't have to be a hipster but I've heard that could be helpful (but a true hipster wouldn't admit they're a hipster) :]

I've contemplated making this a strictly knitting blog, but I've always wondered, do you guys enjoy blogs that share random photography and their current playlists? I recently ran into a blog that does something similar and I really love the layout. I'm going to work on building my design skills to reflect this, although on my current pc it may not be possible. It has been bluescreening at least twice a day lately, and it can't handle loading photoshop (so anticipate some crappy photos or instagram ones like the above).

Hope everyone's week is going well! I promise I won't be a lazy blogger anymore! (*hint hint* the random photography will help me not be a blogging fail!)

I hope you all can join Ginny's Yarn Along and Tamis Amis's WIP Wednesdays.

p.s. My mega huge entrelac blanket is getting turned into a granny square blanket... the other one was just way too big... Entrelac would be better for a lap sized throw blanket. Oh and my ravellenic games shawl is halfway finished, still.

Stellar Stephen West Knits Patterns

Soo I had been rethinking even having a twitter account until I saw Stephen West tweet that all of this patterns were half off with the code he tweeted. Rethinking deleting my twitter? You betcha.

See us college students we are poor, and unless you're going to knit a pattern instantaneously, coveted patterns forever lie in the infamous favorites or queue. But with this little half off puppy I couldn't pass up the chance to save $15!

That's right, his patterns usually sell for $6 a piece and I got five for only $15 instead of $30!

Hint hint the code is mysteryrevealed ;)

but hurry because it's only good until tomorrow!!

Here are the lovelies I scored:

No... I'm not dead

I didn't realize that I had been neglecting my blog for so long. But not to worry, I have some new ideas in store that I'm trying to find time to work on. The end of the summer is turning out to be quite busy. This past weekend I went to ICES cake convention with my mom and met Kerry Vincent! Shes very nice and down to earth, you can tell that she takes pride in her work and she expects others to reach that level as well. She tends to be a stickler of a judge and her advice indicates so. She said that you should master a detail before you attempt to master an entire cake.

Anyways, lately I have been inspired by hard rock music, leather, zippers and metal studs. I have some designs swimming in my head about projects to make. The hard thing though is I like the details to accent my designs. Oftentimes however this means multi-media items, and for Ravelry this is difficult if the person only knows how to knit. So we'll see.
